Receipt OCR: How Receipt Scanning Works
OCR turns receipt images into fields you can search and export. Knowing what it does—and what to check—makes scanning more reliable.
From image to structured fields
Optical character recognition (OCR) reads text in a receipt photo or upload and maps it to useful fields. In ScanMyReceipt, that typically includes merchant, date, total, tax, payment information, and individual line items when they are available on the receipt.
The original image stays with the record. OCR accelerates entry; it does not replace the visual evidence.
Why receipts are harder than clean documents
Receipts vary wildly: different layouts, tiny fonts, wrinkled paper, glare, and faded thermal print. That is why capture quality matters—flat receipt, even light, full slip in frame.
Digital receipts and clear screenshots often read more cleanly than crumpled paper, but both are supported: camera for paper, gallery upload for digital images.
Always do a quick human review
After a scan, glance at merchant, date, and total. Fix mistakes immediately. Those fields drive search, category reports, and exports to PDF, CSV, Excel, or ZIP.
Line items are helpful when present, especially for mixed carts, but not every receipt prints them clearly. Categories, tags, and notes fill in business context OCR cannot infer.
- Merchant name
- Purchase date
- Total and tax when shown
- Payment information when shown
- Line items when available
OCR is a means to organize—not magic accounting
Extracted fields help you organize and find expenses faster. They do not categorize your taxes, reconcile your bank feed automatically like accounting platforms might, or decide deductibility. ScanMyReceipt remains a receipt scanner and expense organizer—offline-first with sync—not tax or accounting software.
ScanMyReceipt helps you organize and manage receipt records. It does not determine whether an expense is deductible and does not provide tax, accounting, or legal advice. Consult a qualified professional for advice about your specific situation.
